Chapter 8 - Grocery Shopping

"So, let me get this straight. I can form a party, but only people I have hired?"

"Yes, at its most basic level that is the idea. There are others that will be able to as well such as apprentices and students. Even if adventuring parties are unavailable to you, there are as many exemptions as there are rules."

It had taken the better part of an hour to find a suitable trailer. There were plenty of nice ones, but between the weight the truck was already pulling and my limited experience hauling a camper, our choices were slim. I had really hoped to find one of those shiny, chrome Airstreams that populated any number of TV shows growing up, but we couldn't even find a used one on the lot. In the end, it came down to a pop-up tent style camper and a minimalistic one bed rig. Not wanting to deal with setting up and tearing down, we took the camping equivalent to a studio apartment.

After the trailer had been hooked up, we got on the topic of adventuring parties and why we'd all gotten credit for the kill on the mana dredger. The answer of special circumstances with that creature was largely unfulfilling, but it did lead to the larger discussion about our next move. I was close to leveling and a plan was coming into focus. With a quick call to Vrah, I set up for Splug to meet us back in town.

"All I need to do then is..."

"No, no more talking about it," Sharna said, cutting me off. "We've been talking about this for the entire trip from Brad-nar."

"Bradner."

"What?"

"It's pronounced Bradner."

The look she shot me was enough to drop the subject. I had been a bit amped up at the prospect of being able to form my own party. With a couple people backing me up the possibilities were limitless. That being said I could understand how it would get on Sharna's nerves.

With Pemberville coming into sight, I was able to settle down and start thinking pragmatically. Instead of heading downtown, we were finally going out to the old grocery store that had been overtaken by a dungeon. What that meant exactly was beyond me, but it seemed to be the selling point of the town. For my part, I believed it was high time I checked out what could be scavenged.

Even at a distance it was plain to see that the property was overrun by a multitude of slimes. The front of the store was normally dominated by traffic using a pair of gas pumps and a drive up window. Instead, it was now eerily silent as the gelatinous creatures of every color climbed over every surface, leading all the way up to the main doors.

"Let's try the back lot," I said, driving past.

"Back lot? Is it a separate parcel of land?"

"No, parking lot. The lines painted on the pavement tell us where to park vehicles like my truck."

Sharna only raised an eyebrow at my explanation.
